BRASILIA, Brazil – The United States, the second largest delegation in the 2012 Olympics, had the largest number of flights to Brazil in 2014. North American travelers have 14,573 flights per year at their disposal to Brazil, which will host the next Olympic Games in 2016. According to a study by the Brazilian Tourism Board (Embratur), international flights to Brazil increased by 30.97% in 2014, compared to 2010.

“The data shows growth opportunity for the Brazilian international tourism, focusing on the 2016 Olympics. Aviation is an essential element in attracting tourists and Brazil is a long haul destination for most of the main tourist source countries in the world, so it is important to make lift assessments, as they bring the overall situation in focus,” said the president of Embratur, Vicente Neto.

The number of flights from all continents increased in the same period. Besides North America, another continent with a strong increase in the route network to Brazil was the Asia / Oceania region. Between 2010 and 2014, the number of flights in the region has increased by 87.32%, largely as a result of the start of the daily route between Dubai and Rio de Janeiro operated by Emirates in January 2012.

Latin America remains the continent with the highest number of flights to Brazil. The number rose from 26,624 in 2010 to 34,107 flights in 2014, representing an increase of 28.10% in the route network with Brazil. In the region, countries highlighted are Cuba, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, which previously had no air link with Brazil and started to operate flights to the country within the past four years. During the same period, Colombia, Barbados, Panama and Chile more than doubled the number of flights to Brazil. Moreover, with 13,817 flights in 2014, Argentina remains the Latin American country with most flights to Brazil.
