DUNEDIN, New Zealand – An Italian tourist involved in a fatal crash in Northern Southland on Friday has been charged by police.

Sergeant Greg Ballantyne, of Gore, said on Monday a 24-year-old man has been charged with careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury, both charges have been laid in the aggravated form.

The man was driving a campervan and allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Two Chain Road and Riversdale-Waikaia Road near Riversdale on Friday morning.

His campervan collided with a Nissan car being driven by Sri Lankan dairy worker Pradeep Edirisinghe, 44, who died at the scene.

The man and a 20-year-old passenger, who suffered serious injuries in the crash, were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

Ballantyne said the man would appear in court on Wednesday, but police were unsure whether he would appear in the Gore or Dunedin District Court.
